BPSC protesters stop trains in Patna, candidates lie down on tracks

Protests have intensified following allegations of a question paper leak in the 70th BPSC Preliminary Exam, held on December 13, 2024. Nearly five lakh candidates participated in the exam. Candidates from the Bapu Examination Center alleged that the question paper was leaked, leading to protests and calls for the exam’s cancellation and reconduct.

In response to the allegations, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) denied any leak and termed the accusations a conspiracy to disrupt the process. However, the commission ordered a re-exam for over 10,000 candidates who appeared at the Bapu Examination Center. The re-exam is scheduled for January 4, 2025, at 22 newly designated centers in Patna. This decision has drawn criticism from candidates, who argue it fails to ensure equal opportunity and addresses only a fraction of the issues.

Protests escalated on Friday as demonstrators blocked railway tracks at the Secretariat Halt Station in Patna, disrupting train services. Protesters, carrying banners and flags, demanded accountability and transparency in the recruitment process. Security forces were deployed to clear the tracks and maintain order.

Government officials, including the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police of Patna, have conducted joint briefings with examination supervisors to ensure the re-exam is conducted transparently and without malpractice. Security arrangements have been tightened at examination centers to prevent disruptions during the retest.

A delegation of candidates recently met the Chief Secretary of Bihar to highlight their grievances and demand a comprehensive resolution. They have called for systemic reforms in competitive examination processes, citing recurring issues of alleged question paper leaks and irregularities.

Political parties and organizations have joined the protests. Independent MP Pappu Yadav announced a statewide rail and highway blockade on January 3, while other groups have planned demonstrations in Patna and across Bihar. The protests have amplified demands for stricter accountability, action against those involved in irregularities, and measures to restore trust in the state’s recruitment system.
